PJ and Robert met at Berkeley in 1968, where Robert helped keep PJ’s Italian sports cars running. In return, PJ gave him a winemaking kit, sparking Robert’s passion for wine. In 1972, he made his first wine in his Berkeley garage and won Best of Show at the California State Fair.
A decade later, they left city jobs to follow their dream of owning a winery. In 1982, they purchased Deerfield Ranch and converted the horse barn into their first winery. In 2000, they expanded to a 47-acre property on Highway 12 in Kenwood. Today, Deerfield Ranch Winery remains family owned, producing about 20,000 cases annually.
